We are the magic industry’s anti-piracy organization.
MagicPiracy.org is a non-profit, grassroots, broad-based media corporation working against the pirating of magic products.
Our membership is composed of magicians, creative artists, fans and other supporters, producers, retailers, and distributors in the magic industry; we are united in a singular non-political, non-partisan common cause — to inform, educate, and where possible, to directly mitigate the piracy of magic products online and off.
Our motto is: Be The Solution. Be The Change.
As an organization, we aggressively investigate individuals involved in direct criminal piracy of published intellectual property such as books, videos, and other related media, and we properly document our efforts should legal action be required. In all instances, our goal is to educate and encourage those who engage in criminal piracy (such as photocopying and scanning books and ripping DVDs) to turn from such activities on their own accord, without the necessity of court intervention.
In many instances, those who download and exchange magic goods without authorization are unaware that it is both illegal and immoral. But more importantly, they don’t realize the direct damage piracy has on the very artists they respect, admire, and want to emulate. It is for this very reason that we want to encourage pirates to be the solution to the problem, and to help change it.
To us, piracy is tantamount to walking into someone’s home and physically taking something of value from that person, such as a television set, a stereo, or even food from their kitchen, and then either keeping it or selling it to a third party.
In all cases piracy hurts the magic industry as a whole, but more specifically, it hurts the artists. Many magicians derive their sole income from inventing, testing, and then marketing the magic effects they come up with. It is how they not only support themselves, but also their families. Unlike larger industries, where it is equally prevalent and damaging, the magic industry is considerably smaller and therefore less profitable as a whole. That is, because there are far less customers buying magic effects, artists are put in a position where even a small amount of piracy directly translates to harder economic times for them, and frustrations that stifle creativity.
Because of this, we take piracy very seriously. And while we want to educate pirates, we recognize that some will have to be dealt with harshly and to the full extent of the law. In such instances where pirates refuse to comply with the law and our reasonable requests to cease and desist from piracy, we will seek every remedy to hold them accountable. In such cases we will use (and encourage others to follow suit) every legal remedy at our disposal. The way to avoid this, is to not copy and share something you don’t have the right to copy and share. It isn’t about the information, as we support teaching and free-speech, it’s about the specific content as it was designed, presented, produced, and published on the specific product that is being copied and shared.
